READ: Paper Towns by John Greene

Paper Towns Book Cover

Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving his popular next-door neighbor in central Florida. After an elaborate night of pranks, however, Margo disappears. Quentin soon discovers highlighted portions in Margo's copy of Leaves of Grass, a collection of poetry by Walt Whitman, and embarks on an adventure, following the clues he thinks she left behind. Only, the closer he gets, the less he sees the girl he thought he knew.

Questions to think about while you read:

  • Who are some of your favorite poets? What do you like about their work?
  • Is there a specific line of poetry that you can recall? Why does it stand out to you?
  • How might poetry improve your communication with others?

LISTEN: Poet Breathe Now

Listen in as Adam Gottlieb, who was featured in the "Louder Than a Bomb" documentary filming the experiences of teenage poetry slam contestants, performs spoken word about what it means to be a poet.

Questions to think about while you listen:

  • What comes to mind when you think of poetry?
  • Does the mood poetry puts you in change when you hear it read aloud? Why or why not?
  • In what ways does this performance remind you of something in your life?

EXPLORE: Blackout Poetry

Blackout Poetry

As the name suggests, this process involves coloring over existing text in order to place a spotlight on the words or phrases that make up your poem. All you need are some pages from an old book and a marker. We’d love for you to share your creativity with us - take a picture and tag @jaxlibrary
