Throughout history, women have made important contributions to our society. March has been set aside as a special month not only to recognize these achievements, but also to reflect on the reasons why they have been, and sometimes still are, overlooked and undervalued. Check out the reads and resources below to celebrate the creativity, intelligence, strength and resilience of women worldwide!
READ: At the End of Everything by Marieke Nijkamp
A group of teens are abandoned at a juvenile center after a plague outbreak. This story of survival is told from the alternating viewpoints of Logan, a nonverbal girl whose beloved sister becomes infected; Emerson, a self-described “good Catholic girl” rejected by their family after coming out as nonbinary; and Grace, the group’s reluctant leader. As supplies dwindle and sickness spreads, they have to decide whom among them is trustworthy and figure out how to ensure their small community endures.
Questions to think about while you read:
- How would you describe a strong woman?
- What influences your beliefs about women's empowerment?
- How can you empower the women in your life?
LISTEN: Rad Girls Who Changed the World Podcast
Nerdette host, Greta Johnson, interviews the author and illustrator of Rad Girls Can, which tells the stories of a diverse group of young women – both contemporary and historical – who have made positive impacts on the world before turning 20. Listen in to learn about some of their favorites!
Questions to think about while you listen:
- Who is a young woman more people should know about? Why does her story resonate with you?
- What are some important gains women have made throughout history?
- What is one change that could make the future better for women, no matter their age?
