READ: The Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
On a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map of a legendary treasure trove, seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies so she can search their ship. More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, only one thing stands in Alosa's way: the unexpectedly clever first mate Riden. But not to worry, no lone pirate can't stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
Questions to think about while you read:
- What is your "mission" when you go to the beach? How do you typically spend your time?
- Share about a moment in or on the ocean when you felt really brave or courageous.
- What is something you've seen others do at the beach that you've always been curious to try?
LISTEN: Rogue History
Ever wonder what your chances are of stumbling across buried treasure on the Jax beaches? It might be even less likely than you figured! Listen in to PBS Origins as maritime archaeologist and historian Joel Cook explores the history of pirates and reveals some unsettling truths about treasure hunters.
Questions to think about while you listen:
- What do you know about the history of the beaches you visit? Are there any shipwrecks nearby?
- Which fact about pirate "treasure" surprises you the most? Why?
- In what ways, if any, does this change your view of the idea of "finders, keepers" at the beach?
EXPLORE: Beach in a Bottle
Instead of writing a message, create a calming ocean scene! Just fill up a bottle halfway, add 2-4 drops of blue food coloring as well as any shells you may have collected this summer, and then carefully pour baby oil into the remaining space before tightening the lid. Now you can enjoy the waves at home, too!
