November is Picture Book Month

#Read Any Good Picture Books Lately?

There's nothing quite like turning the page of a beautifully crafted picture book...

In November and all year long, Jacksonville Public Library celebrates the power and beauty of picture books as well as their importance in building key early literacy skills. Whether you join us at your favorite branch for Little Readers storytime or create your own storytime at home with a free Traveling Tales book bundles and activity kit, the Library is here to support your child on their journey to reading readiness and success.

Early Childhood Programs (birth to age 5)

Little ReadersYou want your child to have all the tools they need to start school. Here’s the toolbox! We start with a story that your child will love, and add music, get everyone up and moving and then we sprinkle in other fun to make it all stick.

We also have a Sensory Friendly Storytime (at select locations) for children with sensory sensitivities. It combines traditional storytime components with supportive elements. We’ve also limited attendance to enhance the experience.

JaxKids Book Club Preschool Party

Rainbow Soup imageAttention Pre-K friends and families! Stop by Regency Square Branch Library this Saturday, November 4, between 10:30 a.m. and 12 noon for a Preschool Party featuring a special read-aloud of Rainbow Soup and Sherry & Terry Go to the Library -- two of the eight all-new picture books included in this year's free JaxKids Book Club backpack! You'll play games, do crafts and walk away with some "owlsome" Winn-Dixie and JaxKids Book Club-themed giveaways!

The first 50 families in attendance will receive a tote from Winn-Dixie containing all the fresh ingredients to make "Rainbow Soup" at home! There will also be JaxKids Book Club backpacks (while supplies last) for any four-year-old who did not receive their free books at a Duval County Voluntary Pre-K center in September or October.

This event is sponsored by Winn-Dixie Gives Foundation and Harveys Gives Foundation, in collaboration with the Library Foundation of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Public Library.

What's Jax Kids Book Club?

JaxKids Book Club provides free books for all Duval County preschoolers that families are able to keep and use at home to build early literacy skills and foster a love of reading. In the pages of these colorful books, children will find familiar landmarks and locations around Jacksonville, while also developing the skills necessary to ensure they become strong readers.

Having books in the home improves academic, economic and health outcomes. Young children whose parents read to them daily have been exposed to 290,000 more words by the time they enter kindergarten than kids who aren’t read to regularly. So, the more books the better, and we are happy to give four-year-olds in Duval County eight amazing books to grow their home library!
