Believe in Your Shelf: Celebrate Literacy Week January 22-26

#Believe in Your Shelf

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is designed to raise awareness about the importance of reading and to inspire Florida's students and families to make reading part of their daily routines. This year, the Florida Department of Education has scheduled the celebration for the week of January 22–26. The theme of this year’s Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is "Believe In Your Shelf – Building Resiliency Through Reading!"

Improving literacy rates is a top priority for Mayor Deegan and her administration, as fewer than half of 3rd graders are reading on grade level. Literacy levels affect economic development, public safety, and overall quality of life for the residents of Duval County. That is why the City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Public Library will cap off Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! with the launch of a new citywide reading initiative for students of all ages!

Reading Challenge Kick-Off

Mayor Deegan's River City Readers kicks off on Saturday, January 27 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. with a FREE event at the Main Library downtown.

Attendees will receive free books, free clear backpacks, and free lunch, along with the chance to participate in literacy workshops and connect with dozens of local vendors. You'll also see children’s author Vincent Taylor perform, along with other activities and attractions. Don't miss your chance to meet Jacksonville Jaguar's drumline, Jaxson de Ville, and ROAR cheerleading squad! Please note: Registration is strongly recommended (please register all adults and children who will be attending).

While you're here, be sure to sign up for Beanstack - and a library card (if you don't already have one)! Children and their caregivers will be able to easily keep track of their reading minutes on the app. Volunteers will be on hand to help people download the free app. Through Beanstack, children and their caregivers will be able to log their reading minutes - with the goal of reading at least 20 minutes per day. At the end of the year, the city’s top young readers will be given prizes!
